Counselor’s Corner – September 27, 2019

COLLEGE, COLLEGE, COLLEGE!

College application season is here, with students busy preparing their lists and applications and Teachers busy writing letters of recommendation. Stay informed and up to date on college visits and timelines and be sure to read the BIS College and University Handbook.

As the BIS College Counselor, I recently attended the CIS/EARCOS Conference on University Admissions in Bangkok where I met with (quite literally) hundreds of college reps from universities around the world and made personal connections for our students, finding programs and resources for each DP student. Many of those reps will be visiting BIS in the coming weeks.

I also presented a workshop on using Mindfulness in the College Application Process, a process I am unfolding via my scheduled MYP/DP Hour classes with each grade level (9-12) each term.  The objective is to work toward the application season in grade 12 with a sense of balance and inner knowing, having calmly reflected on each step in the process throughout the high school years.

SEPT. 27th: BIS COLLEGE & UNIVERSITY FAIR (8-11AM)

NEW MINDFULNESS BENCHES AT BIS

We are thrilled to have three new mindfulness benches on campus, one for each division, compliments of our fabulous PTA. The students have selected a mindfulness quote that will be added to each bench. The benches are places to sit and reflect and go inward- calm spaces in which to breath, and be mindful (aware) of one’s surroundings, feelings, and thoughts. The aim is that the benches, coupled with the mindfulness curriculum taught in classes throughout the year, provide students a sense of comfort and control over how they manage their emotions and respond to the various issues that come up for them each day.
