Dear Parents,

Mark your calendars for this spectacular university networking event. We already have over 50 universities signed up to visit on this day from 8-11 AM on the covered court. The Fair will begin with workshops for students in grades 9-12 on various topics including essay writing, finding scholarships, studying in Australia, and careers in hospitality. Secondary Students and Parents are invited to attend the BIS Fair and speak to university reps from around the globe.

All Secondary Students (and Parents) are invited to attend this fair during their lunch break and after school, to speak to the visiting reps and learn about potential programs of study at these universities.

MYP Corner

Service as Action

Students are busy creating their videos, reflections and practicing their performances to showcase their EOTC trips at Renon Mall in mid October. This is the last session they will be able to use the MYP hour to finalise their submissions. The following week students will be asked to think about what Service as Action activity they wish to be involved in.

Now is the time to encourage your child and ask them what activity/service they might want to initiate themselves. This is especially important for our Grade 9 and 10 students as it is a learning outcome that must be addressed before the end of Grade 10. They may speak to Ms. Vera Pereira (CAS and SA Coordinator) for further advice.

CAS Corner

by Nabil Dermawan

Taman Bacaan activity happens every Tuesday after school. Through this activity, I hope to engage in not only with the local students, but also the adults who are interested in collaborating with students from our school in terms of learning English, musical instruments and other activities that would be beneficial for them. This activity will help those who join enhance their collaboration skills in order to work together as a group in doing different activities as well as helping them improve their English. This activity will allow various different people from the BIS community as well as the local Taman Bacaan community to get to know each other and collaborate.

I am collaborating with my peers when helping to teach the Taman Bacaan community about music as well as how to read and write in English. We will be playing games with them in order to make each session more interactive for everyone. Over the next few months, I hope that this session would be very beneficial for the Taman Bacaan community as well as for us.

A few of the learning outcome that we have come across during this activity is, Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth, Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process, Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience, Show commitment and perseverance in CAS experiences and Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.

This activity has really impacted the people joining in various different ways. Starting from how it has allowed the BIS community to engage more with the local community. It has also helped us improve our skills as a “Teacher” as well as teamwork in general in order to work as a team and to help each other out when teaching the local community. Personally, this process has taught me how to become more organized as I have set up reminders weekly and plan ahead for future programs that I will be doing with the community.
