Dear Parents,

There is plenty happening in the Secondary School at the moment. Next weekend, our Senior Football teams will travel to Bandung for the ISSAC Football Tournament. After school activities begin on Monday and it is very pleasing to see an increasing number of students looking to lead these activities. Please encourage your child to think about what they can offer as an ASA in Term 3. The Grade 12 students submit their final Extended Essay on October 31, which is a major milestone in the Diploma Programme. On Monday evening we will be running four sessions on how parents can support student success at home. We hope to see as many of you as possible.

Service as Action & CAS

This week, all grade 6 to 10 students spent their MYP Hour on planning their Term 2 Service as Action activity. Thank you to the PTA for inviting me to this week’s meeting to give a short presentation of what the Service as Action (SA) and Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) programs mean to our students and the BIS community.

Both these programs aim to support and encourage Secondary students to “grow in confidence and responsibility as they become “actors” in the “real world” beyond school.” (MYP: From principles into practice, 2014)

This year, I have taken the role of coordinator of both programs, and I look forward to what our students will accomplish. If you have questions, suggestions, or concerns, feel free to contact me at vpereira@baliis.net or schedule a meeting by clicking here

In the meantime, feel free to look through the PDF of the presentation I shared with the PTA.

CAS Corner by Mariia Matrosova

29.8.2019

Today it was our second day working with adults and students. Before breakfast, we again had a small discussion of what we are gonna do with Indonesian adults. After having breakfast we had an English class, our groups decided to switch students, so we had male students. During the class we were mainly talking about temple words that they can use later, maybe even having excursions to temples, this could help them to increase the popularity of Les Village. Also, we were trying to teach them some basic grammar and the ability to create full sentences. At the end of the class, we went for an excursion to Swa Anyar temple. We found out the difference in the temple entrance and why there is three entrance inside the temple: 2 for people, pretty and main for gods. We also went to a small temple near the sea. Then we came back and had lunch. Before going to the school we were deciding what we would cover during the class. We decided to start with basics: alphabet and to make it better and funnier we decided to sing the alphabet song. Furthermore, we played a word game, my teammates were telling the letter and then students would find words with that letter. Then we were studying body parts and to make entertaining we were singing “ahead and shoulders” song. In the end, we were just trying to teach them some emotions. To end up our lessons we decided to give kids candies just to make sure that they would have positive memory about our classes.

On our last evening in  Les Village, we enjoyed a traditional Balinese dance. The first dance they have performed is called Tari Topeng which means mask dance in Indonesian. Topeng performances open with a series of non-speaking masked characters which may not be related to the story to be performed. After the Tari Topeng, a woman in kebaya has performed a Balinese dance. She called people out from the crowd to dance together with her. Some moments were truly fun and memorable. When Tarkan, Mr. Wood, and Mr. Klaus were dancing together, their dance was full of funny moves and facial expressions, and even their awkwardness made it look more hilarious. Another thing that made all of us laugh was when Jae Yeon chased Mr. Gokalp to dance. The fact that he was running away from dancing made us all laugh and smile. Overall, we had so many laughs, cheering up and smiles throughout the day. This memory for sure has become one of the most memorable and unforgettable.

CAS outcomes:

  1. Identify your strengths and develop areas for personal growth.

Throughout today, in my opinion, I could fully show myself as a planner, I was trying to make everyone work or at least participate. I decided that because of my lack of knowledge in the Indonesian language, the only thing that I could do and improve on is trying to plan our lessons and maybe sometimes calm down and make my teammates participated in the task.

  1. Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience.

To successfully lead our classes with students and elders during morning preparation and after lunch session, we create specific plans and also separating worksheets in different groups, so we wouldn’t have to waste time during class to clear up what we want to do.

  1. Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences.

During today I was trying to take a leadership role, so I was trying to organize what we are gonna do, and also was trying to help organize worksheets not only for my group but also for another one.

  1. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.

In my opinion, it is really important to work collaboratively, especially when you are working with a large number of people you always try to separate your attention to as many people as possible. Another thing that benefits working together is the lack of knowledge of the Indonesian language like I already stated in our group we had a limited amount of people that could freely communicate with the local community, so English speakers can lead them and narrow down our plan.

  1. Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions.

When you are working with kids or elders that don’t know the language that good, you need to be patient and understandable to them. Also when we were in the sample we had to condor our actions, like how we behave there to show our respect, we also had to wear a sarong because we were visiting a place for gods.
