Kindy/Grade 1 “Healthy Recipe Book IV” now available

Our 2020-21 Grade 1/Kindy students in Ibu Alyshia Kitchen’s class, along with their ITPs and help from some parents, have completed their “Healthy Recipe Book IV” and it has been printed and delivered to their class; parents of those students should be on the lookout for this coming home if it hasn’t already.  This annual publication is enjoyable and fun for the authors and interesting and educational for the BIS community. These recipes can be made together as a family quickly and easily and are also good for you (most of them anyway). Also in the book is a summary of the unit as well as an intro written collaboratively by the students themselves. The library has a copy available for

checkout (as well as the previous 3 issues, or check out the link to the digital version above), so come down and get healthy!

Parent Information Session – Managing Technology at Home

Thank you to parents that attended our information session on Thursday focusing on technology and digital citizenship. Ibu Sharon, our school counselor, along with Mr. Erickson, our IT coordinator, shared their expertise on digital citizenship and managing technology as a family. Parents were given the opportunity to work in small groups to share challenges and consider how to overcome them. Parents were open about the challenges that their families needed to work on to improve their media balance. You can check out the slides from the presentation below:

Taking Action in Grade 5

As Grade 5 students continue their exhibition journey, inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals. A small group of students took action to support our local community and our wonderful PTA. Please find a write up below from one of our students Mateo.

Grade 5 Students Taking Action: Food Drive Zero Hunger and No Poverty
April 6th 2021
Hi, my name is Mateo. I took part in this food drive. The food drive started off when Ibu Nadia told us that the main part of the exhibition is to take action and that there will be a food drive with the PTA. We sent an email to Ibu Jinae, the head of PTA and asked her if we could join and help the food drive. She answered our mail and joined our 2:05 zoom to talk about the food drive. She said that we will have to design a poster for the food drive. Once the poster was finished we sent an email to Ibu Aurora and asked her if she could help us, she said yes and we had a zoom. We discussed everything and told her how the poster should be. After that we just waited and waited until it was April 6th, Food Drive Day!

Grade 4 “Giving Credit to Creators”

With the support from Mr. Marshall, Grade 4 has been exploring their role as responsible and principled citizens. They have defined the terms “copyright” and “creator”, thinking critically about what these terms mean to them by discussing different “What if…” scenarios. Here is some of our thinking when reflecting on Charlie’s predicament. Charlie, who is a student photographer that discovers a photo of his is used for a Pizza Shop advertisement.

Grade 4 have imagined themselves as creators and considered their own responses to sharing their ideas.

They worked to create a FUN mashable short video using creative commons images and music. The purpose of this was to compile a list of credits citing where the pictures and sounds came from.

Students have been practicing skills as creators planning advertisements, building storyboards and writing blurbs.

We are building skills to collaborate with marketing to design student-focussed advertisements for BIS as part of our ACTION and summative assessment.
