Bali MUN X Coming in 2022

Many details to be determined, but one thing is for sure….the 10th incarnation of Bali Model United Nations is coming in 2022 (very slickly referred to as BaliMUN X). Soon, we will be recruiting students to participate; whether you are a returning veteran or someone who has never done a MUN conference before, all are welcome. We will need delegates (if you don’t know what that means, don’t worry, you will), chairpeople (basically like bosses) and possibly some other positions (IT/media/marketing).

MUN is a simulation of the United Nations, where students represent countries across the world, create issues to be debated (this year’s theme is appropriately titled “THE END OF CIVILIZATION?“) and then engage in research, conversation, speech-making, wheeling and dealing and eventually submitting proposals and resolutions to some of the world’s most current and important challenges. Besides helping to solve the world’s problems, you can have some fun and make some friends from other schools across Bali and maybe even Indonesia. You can check out last year’s website as well as our BIS Library MUN research site which includes past examples of student work.

This year’s conference will be online (but you can probably miss a day of school if you join), with details such as dates, topics and country assignments to come (yes, you could be a Turkey).  Be on the lookout for more information soon or contact Mr. Marshall, Cintya Roby, Calum Leys or Manon Pecquery for more information.

BIS MOST WANTED – A Grade 9 Study of Descriptive Writing
Mrs. Erickson

It’s that time of year again when the Grade 9 students turn into “criminals” and become BIS’s Most Wanted! So, who are these criminals, and what have they done? In this unit, students spent a few weeks learning about and practicing different strategies for writing descriptively, and then applied those strategies to a very short story detailing their crimes against BIS.  Students wrote their own chase scene using sensory details, body behaviors for their character, utilizing powerful words, and figurative language. The chase scenes needed to be suspenseful and full of tension, which is actually a difficult type of writing to accomplish, so they also practiced “playing” with punctuation to add new energy to their short pieces. They nailed it!  Another great round of BIS Most Wanted Posters written and posted in the books.

Please see a few of the examples below, and when you get a chance in Term 2, come on over to Room 5 to see the rest of them displayed on the bulletin board. Great job, Grade 9 – but don’t let me catch you again, you swarthy criminals!

Service as Action
Students in the MYP are currently engaged in meetings, planning actions that relate to a diverse range of issues. We will have many exciting events and initiatives to share in the coming weeks. Below are some student reflections regarding the keynote speech delivered by Robi Navicula several weeks ago. There is also a recording attached for those that wish to view a section of the speech.

Ralvian in Grade 10
On September 23rd, Mr. Robi, singer and songwriter of the band Navicula, gave us a presentation about his band’s career and their involvement with social injustice and global issues primarily around Indonesia. He summarized how Navicula got involved with global issue movements and collaborating with organizations and events, as well as “tackling and writing” to help inspire and spread awareness on that issue. Robi informed us how and why it’s important to get involved with social activism and preservation of the environment and primarily wants everyone to encourage youth to connect what they find fun and enjoyable, with something they’re passionate about. Such as music and global issues such as climate change. We were given the opportunity to talk with Robi and ask questions regarding the musical writing process, objectives when it comes to releasing a song and also discussing our group’s activity aim and exchanging possible ideas for more ways we can help the community. I can also mention as a fellow songwriter, listening through his presentation has inspired me to write my own protest songs regarding global issues.

Charlotte in Grade 9
I personally found Mr. Robi’s and Navicula’s story inspiring because of how similar it’s start is to our SA environments, and because of the perseverance they showed. I’m excited to work in the SA groups this year, Mr. Robi’s keynote speech only solidified this!

Seo-Yeon in Grade 7
I thought that it was creative with how they thought of the idea to use music to spread awareness and to take action. It was impressive with how they thought to do that to stand out from other bands. Hearing from how they started out as students, it shows that we are capable of doing the same.

Help Kids Fight Cyberbullying Behavior
from Common Sense

Most kids will encounter mean behavior at some point in their digital lives. For some kids, this experience is a blip that’s easily forgotten, while for others it can have deep, long-lasting effects. For parents, the key is staying involved in kids’ lives — both online and off — so they can step in and offer help if necessary. With guidance from parents and educators, kids can learn how to dodge the drama and stand up for others.
