BIS Theater Spotlight: Shadow Puppetry from China/Taiwan
Counselor Corner
On Thursday we hosted the BIS Career Day. All students in grades 6-12 had the opportunity to interact with 23 professionals from different careers.
Rich Robinson, one of our own BIS parents, opened the Career day with a short speech in which he motivated students in thinking about their careers in the 21st Century. He focused on technological development and its consequences for the future.
In the sessions, students listened to the life stories of professionals in Business and how they started their businesses in their areas of passion. In another, we heard a great conversation about Law and Diplomacy where the stories of the Australian consular officer and a Dutch border police officer brought up a lot of questions. In the room with three artists, students learned more about their careers and studies in the art industry. The students who chose to interact with the professionals from Hospitality had an active discussion about the pro’s and con’s of the jobs. In the room with the professionals in Communication and Journalism, students learned about different upcoming jobs in communication. I heard from the students that they had an interesting talk about Sustainability and the Environment with the professionals and they will take this information and the connection with the professionals into their CAS activities. In the Technology group, students learned how to become a producer at Spotify and what technologies will bring them in the future. The Doctors had great tips for the students who came to the Health and Medical group.
During MYP hour, the students discussed in their CAS groups what information and connections from the Career day can be useful for their CAS activities.
Thanks to everyone who participated or gave suggestions for guest speakers for this year’s Career Day.
Next year, we will ask you again if you or somebody you know will be available to talk with our students about their career on BIS Career day 2023. The students loved it, and we did too.

MYP Design Update
Design class students are hard at work on their second-semester Design units! In Design class, students use the MYP design cycle process to create design solutions to real-world problems. In Criterion A of the design process students do some thinking about what exactly they are doing and why it matters, ask questions that might be helpful to answer in order to be successful, and do two SWOT analyses of similar solutions. Criterion B is where students determine how they will know if they are successful and come up with a design plan. In Criterion C they actually create the design and in Criterion D they get feedback and reflect on how successful they were.
This term Grade 6 students started out doing a mini-unit covering the basics of creating a design in 3D. Their challenge is to recreate our design classroom in 3D with some fun additions of their own (doesn’t everyone need a free snack bar to learn better?). Here are some 3D designs students have created as they are learning to 3D model.
Grade 7 is working on the challenge of using our electronics/robotics tools to create a learning experience for fellow classmates. This is an excellent opportunity for them to use the programming skills they learned in Grade 6 to control motors, sensors, lights, and other equipment. Some examples of goals they are working on include; little race cars that move forward as people answer questions correctly, moving demonstration of how muscles work, a trivia game that lights up and moves to indicate correct answers.
In Semester two, Grade 8 is given the opportunity to use the design cycle process to solve a challenge of their choice. At this point in the unit, students have chosen topics based on their interests and come up with design challenges of their own. Some examples of projects students have chosen include; sewing their own recyclable bags, creating a time management tool, doing a painting that merges Balinese and Japanese themes, and designing trading cards. If you see an 8th grader ask them what challenges they are working on! !
BIS THEATRE SPOTLIGHT – Shadow Puppetry from China/Taiwan
As Lunar New Year approaches, we are reminded of the vibrancy and legacy of Chinese arts.
Students in DP Theatre course had a unique learning opportunity to explore the world theatre tradition of shadow puppetry from China and Taiwan. They researched the historical, cultural, and linguistic context of this art form and analyzed the performance conventions of the genre. An interesting fact – Chinese shadow puppets vary in size from 20 cm to 1m!
