BIS Shines at BaliMUN X

The 10th Annual Bali Model United Nations concluded this past weekend with a heavy dose of Bali Island School influence. All told, more than 100 chairpersons, delegates, student administrators/planners and school directors participated in the two day, “End of Civilization”-themed summit. The BIS delegation was comprised of  35 delegates, one Secretary General (Calum Leys), one Deputy Secretary General (Manon Pecquery), one Head of Chair Training and Communications (Cintya Roby)  and one Chairperson of the SPECPOL (Specialist Political and Decolonization) Committee, Caspia Nadapdap.

Our delegates debated eight current issues facing our world, spread over four committees and two days. While all participants created research papers and opening speeches beforehand for two issues and all participated effectively and responsibly during MUN-X, a handful of BIS students stood out and were recognized for their efforts.  The following accolades were bestowed upon selected students….

  • Lucie Senes, delegate of Canada – Best Position Paper, United Nations Development Programme committee, “The Future of Farming”
  • Amieca Joustra, delegate of India – Best Position Paper, Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific committee, “Women’s Economic Empowerment
  • Maulin Rawat, delegate of Timor-Leste – Best Position Paper, Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific committee, “How to Rebuild the Asia Pacific after 1.5 years of lockdown: The Pandemic Environment”
  • Seo Yeon Bang, delegate of Italy, – Best Position Paper, Security Council committee, “Climate Refugees”
  • Dzulfikar Helmi, delegate of Israel, – Best Position Paper, Specialist Political and Decolonization committee, ‘The Changing Nature of War”
  • MOST IMPROVED DELEGATE, United Nations Development Program: Thomas Ward, delegate of Indonesia

  • MOST IMPROVED DELEGATE, Security Council: Simin Kim, delegate of Saudi Arabia

SOS Food Drive

Due to the sudden surge of Covid cases in BIS and everyone is back online, we have decided to change our initial Food Drive plans. Starting from the 14th of February (Monday) until the 10th of March (Thursday), we will be collecting food donations. Instead of assigning grades for different types of foods like we did in the past food drives, we will have everyone, who is willing to donate, bring specific ingredients we will be needing. Specific ingredients include rice, cooking oil, and salt/sugar/pepper. There will be a box in the room near the nurses’ office where you can place the food donations. We greatly appreciate any donations given, especially during this time.

Signed,
SOS SaA Group

Gracious Givers (Service as Action)
Service as Action feature group of the week is ‘Gracious Givers’.

Please read the words of Agus and William and watch the short video.

Gracious Givers began in Term 1 as BIS students planned fundraising events that would help the organization called Solemen. Solemen is a nonprofit organization in Bali, that helps people with disabilities and the underprivileged. Unfortunately, the Solemen community has been struggling to raise money as they have lost most of their sponsorships due to the Covid 19 pandemic. In Term 1 we were very fortunate to be able to raise some money for them by doing the Gracious Givers Bake Sale, during BIS Live. We were also very grateful that we were able to meet with the founder of Solemen, Robert Epstone. Where he shares his personal experiences and as to why he started this organization and from that day forward we have built a strong relationship with him. This is why this semester is going to be a lot more fun for the Gracious Givers team and right now we are planning some exciting fundraising events. We hope that if the situation allows, we can come back to school to do these fundraising events in school, so keep an eye out!
