Discussing the Events in Ukraine With your Children

Dear Parents

As an international school with 24 nationalities in the student body and 13 among the staff, conversations about escalating conflicts happen amongst students, in lessons, and at home. In this counselor corner, I would like to share resources on how to be informed, but also how to guide conversations.

I belong to the International School Counselors Association and they have posted the resources below for discussion.

In leading this type of discussion it is ok to say you don’t know all the details and that like the children you are impacted (and then share how you are impacted).  It is hard to know how children feel about the issue so it is good to be aware that there may be conflicting opinions with classmates or friends. You can set the stage by asking them to be mindful of the many varied opinions that may be in the group.

Please let me know if you notice any children who are struggling with the crisis.
