Message from the Head of School – May 6, 2022

Role Models
~ Somebody is learning how to be a person by watching you ~

I had the opportunity to remind the Secondary students of this added responsibility today in our first in-person Secondary Assembly since March of 2020!

One of the most beautiful aspects of life on the BIS campus is the interaction we witness between students in different grade levels. Today, Grade 9 students watched Cynthia Roby present her IB Theater investigation. Today, Grade 5 students played capture the flag in PE class with Grade 9 students. Last week, Grade 12 students mentored our PYP Exhibition presenters. These interactions present opportunities for our older students to lead, to guide, to advise. Those interactions are wonderful and are vital to the community school feeling we love about BIS.

I made the point today to the Secondary students that those manufactured opportunities are brilliant and need to be celebrated. I hope I also made the point that they (and the adults on campus) are being watched all the time. And the beautiful thing about life on the BIS campus is that the majority of our students for the majority of the time understand this great responsibility and are teaching their younger schoolmates how to be a person of character each and every day. When mistakes are made (and they are made) it is our responsibility as the adults on campus to step in and ensure learning occurs.

We have a beautiful community at BIS!

Physical Education (PE) / After School Activities (ASAs) and Masks
Beginning on Monday, May 9, students will be allowed to exercise without a mask during vigorous activity. When the activity stops and after a drink of water, students will be asked to mask up again. Physical distancing will be maintained throughout the outdoor PE classes and during ASAs that involve sporting/exercise activities.
