MATHS DEPARTMENT
Grade 6
Topic: Data Handling
Students were introduced to the Data Handling Cycle as a means to see how data is collected, processed, presented and analyzed. Students analyzed different kinds of data and represented them in the most effective way. Students explored mathematical ways in which to express and represent the data.

Grade 8
Topic: Simultaneous Equations
Students developed their understanding of practical applications of Algebra. Students learned to make decisions about what type of factoring to employ, and the best approach for finding the roots of equations. They learned how to find the unknown variables of two algebraic equations with the same unknown variables and the same value of variables that satisfies these equations.

Grade 9
Topic: Coordinate Geometry
Students learned to find the distance, gradient and midpoint of lines. They acquired geometrical skills to plot the points on a graph and find the equation of lines. Students learned how linear equations describe the connection between the x and y coordinates of any points on a straight line and how these equations can be used to model situations and make predictions.

Grade 10
Topic: Sequences & Finance
The students of grade 10 Standard Mathematics learned about Sequences and Finance. In “Sequences” the students focused on applying modeling skills to find sequences. They conducted an investigation of patterns in Number Sequences. They also began to learn about “Finance” by exploring simple and compound interest as a consequence of the number sequence.

Grade 10- Extended Mathematics
Students learned about the topics: Quadratics, Trigonometry, Statistics & Probability. Students explored a quadratic from various perspectives, including the effect on the vertex and the zeros of the quadratics by changing the coefficients. They used Desmos to find these connections. This group is getting ready to begin its IBDP journey in August 2023!

Grade 9 – Extended Mathematics
Students learned about the topics: Exponents, Algebraic Fractions, Coordinate Geometry, Quadratics and Sets. They investigated how the concept of the gradient is used to find whether the lines are parallel or perpendicular. This group is new to Extended Mathematics and finds this Mathematics challenging, but we must appreciate them for their grit and determination to succeed.

Grade 11 – Analysis & Approaches
Students learned about the topics: Sequences, Exponents, Logarithms, Mathematical Induction, Binomial Theorem, Functions and Quadratics. We always have some great discussions happening during Maths lessons. Students always come forward and share their views and ideas with the rest of the students.

Grade 12 – Analysis & Approaches
Students learned about Statistics, Discrete Random Variables, Continuous Random Variables, Vectors and Complex Numbers. We have already completed the syllabus for the DP, and now we are doing topical revision. Students are preparing for their mock exams in February. Also, please wish them good luck with the final exams in May 2023!

DESIGN
The main objective of the Design class is to learn about the design cycle process, students worked on various projects.

Grade 6 students had to create a game using the online platform Scratch to present a science topic. Within 3 minutes, they had to present the topic to their fellow students.

Grade 7 students created a 3D design of the classroom from around the campus for prospective students who have to decide if to join Bali Island School. The 3D view of the rooms are in a video format with narrations.

Grade 8 students had more options to choose from, and even they could come up with their own ideas. Some of the products they worked on turned out to be successful, yet some didn’t. As part of the design cycle process, learning from failure is important to adopt a growth mindset.

University Workshop with G11 Students and Parents on December 8th
On Thursday 8th December, Ibu Noortje held a workshop for G11 students and parents about University Applications. Presentation link

We will be back again next year starting in February (every first Thursday at the beginning of each month) to bring more interesting workshop topics for Primary and Secondary parents. Please send Ibu Noortje an email if you have any requests for a workshop topic.

Coffee with the Counselor
Every Thursday (Except the 1st of the month) in Fun Bite, there are nice talks, with or without coffee. In this talk, parents share questions and experiences together and with Ibu Noortje. It is great to see that it is getting busy and it has become a habit to sit and talk together on Thursday mornings.

Thursday Coffee with the Counselor

Join Ms. Noortje every Thursday morning at 7:45 (droff-off) for a coffee and informal chat at Fun Bites*

*Except first Thursday of each month when there will be a workshop
