Design
In Design grade 6 class, students are learning about the Problem Solving and Computing, a highly interactive and collaborative introduction to the field of computer science, as framed within the broader pursuit of solving problems. Students are practicing using a problem-solving process to address a series of puzzles, challenges, and real-world scenarios. Also, students learn how computers input, output, store, and process information to help humans solve problems. The unit concludes with a project designing an application that helps solve a problem they choose to solve. Here are some photos with different perspectives on what are/not a computer.

In the Design Process unit of grade 7, students transition from thinking about computer science as a tool to solve their own problems to consider the broader social impacts of computing. Through a series of design challenges, students are asked to consider and understand the needs of others while developing a solution to a problem. The second half of the unit consists of an iterative team project, during which students have the opportunity to identify a need that they care about, prototype solutions both on paper and in App Lab, and test their solutions with real users to get feedback and drive further improvements.

In grade 8, with the Social Entrepreneurship Program, students grow their entrepreneurial mindsets and skills as they apply their passions and strengths to solve creatively societal challenges. Students will design their solutions through the design thinking process, conduct market research, create a sustainable business model, and present their idea in a culminating “Shark Tank” pitch presentation.

Students had to create their ultimate entrepreneurial “dream team” poster. They will then add team members to their poster (real or fictional), highlighting the mindsets and skills they will bring to the team to make up the ultimate entrepreneurial dream team – ready to take on any challenge! Here are some examples.
