EARCOS Workshop: “Growing Global Citizens

EARCOS WEEKEND WORKSHOP

“GROWING GLOBAL CITIZENS” with Deidre Fischer and Kenny PeavyDSC_7127

13-14 February 2016, at Bali Island School

Valentine’s Day weekend 2016 saw seven BIS staff join workshop participants from Bali, Jakarta, Malaysia and Brunei to discuss ways and means for students to develop inter-cultural competencies, an international mindset, and to be able to call themselves ‘global citizens’.

The discussions were challenging and wide ranging as we attempted to identify the traits of a global citizen and make connections between school Guiding Statements, IB authorisation requirements, and accreditation requirements.

A live web conference with Yuan Yuan Kelly, a DP2 student at the Think Global School, currently located in Bosnia, was inspiring and her insight into what makes a global citizen was valuable.

“Documenting how we implement global citizenship in Bali Island School was very helpful as it reminded us as a staff of the many ways that we are promoting global citizenship at BIS as well as giving us the opportunity to share practical examples with other schools. It was empowering to realise how much we are actually doing to promote global citizens in our school.”

On day two of the workshop, the focus shifted toward service activities and EOTC and their role in developing a global citizen. “Encouraging students to align their talents and passions to create meaningful service activities was brilliant.” Developing an action plan to promote global citizenship in our school allowed participants to create a path forward after the workshop. It is satisfying to walk away from a workshop with personalized resources that are ready to use and can be immediately applied to our program.
