Dear Parents,

Today marks the end of a successful and productive Term 3. Thank you to all of you who participated in our 3-Way Conferences on Thursday. Please give your feedback if you haven’t already here. The feedback received so far is mostly positive. The venue change seems to have been appreciated and we will use some panels to separate the MPR next time to reduce the noise. We will look at a way to signal the end of appointments as some still appeared to go over time which impacts everyone. Thank you for your support as we continue to improve what we do. Please enjoy a wonderful break and we look forward to seeing you and your children back on Monday, April 8.

Kartini Day

Since Kartini Day this year is on Sunday, please come to school in your favorite Indonesian traditional dress or batik on Thursday, the 18th of April.

What is Kartini Day?

April 21

Kartini Day is an Indonesian holiday commemorating the birth in 1879 of Raden Ajeng Kartini, one of the country’s national heroes and a pioneer in the emancipation of Indonesian women. Throughout Indonesia women wear their national dress to symbolize their unity, and the nation enjoys parades, lectures, and various school activities.

Lady Kartini, the daughter of a Javanese nobleman who worked for the Dutch colonial administration, was exposed to Western ideas when she attended a Dutch school. When she had to withdraw from school because she was of noble birth, she corresponded with Dutch friends telling of her concern both for the plight of Indonesians under colonial rule and for there stricted lives of Indonesian women. She married in 1903 and began a fight for the right of women to be educated and against the unwritten but all-pervading Javanese law, Adat .

She died in 1904 at the age of 25, after the birth of her first child. Her letters were published in 1911 under the title, Door duisternis tot licht (“Through Darkness into Light”), and created support for the Kartini Foundation, which opened the first girls’ school in Java in 1916.

G8 English Class

Students have just finished our latest novel unit focused on the theme of Acceptance.  In this unit, they were allowed the choice of books to read from the following list of all-star novels: As a summative assessment, students created a graphic essay, a visual mind map that allows you to synthesize and organize details and ideas from the novels they read. In this graphic essay, students needed to include:

  • an effective thesis statement comparing three themes of acceptance evident in the different choices of novels they chose to read this term.
  • Colors and symbols as an organizational device.
  • A unifying symbol or symbols that connect to the themes identified as part of their overall thesis statement.
  • Relevant quotations (clearly cited in MLA format) and explanations of quotes/evidence from the novels.
  • Neat and hand-written on A3 paper, only worked on in-class, and presented to the class.

I think the student’s work speaks for itself!  Please enjoy a random sampling of these graphic essay’s below.

STUCO by Lucie Regal

In this STUCO meeting we discussed the coming up basketball tournament that will be held next wednesday from 3-4:30. Using the group’s collaborative skills we came to a consensus on the prizes that would be given to the team with the most spirit, best dressed and of course the winners, working together sped up the process of organising this event. Working with the representatives to announce that today is the last day that students/teachers/parents can join as the teams will soon be made. The teams will be made up of individuals will different levels of basketball skills as in the form you must state your level at basketball from 1-5, this will allow the teams to be fair and equal giving everyone a chance to improve their skills and have fun. During the volleyball tournament there was music playing so we will be talking with Iona hoping that we will be in charge of the music again as it was successful and truly created a playful atmosphere.
