Primary Grade 5 – An inquiry into Traditional Houses in Indonesia.

As part of their unit on “How we Express Ourselves”, students in language B Indonesian have been inquiring into the different types of traditional houses in Indonesia.

As a tuning in activity, students brainstormed ideas and then looked at different types of traditional houses in Indonesia. The vocabulary related to this unit was practiced through flashcards and vocabulary games. They also had opportunities to communicate with local children. Speaking in an authentic context helped students to gain confidence when speaking Bahasa Indonesian.

As they inquired into different cultural identities, they worked collaboratively in small groups and researched traditional houses in Indonesia. The information was collected and presented through a slide show presentation. They learned from each other’s presentations by asking questions. After the presentation, they found out that every island in Indonesia has it’s own traditional house which is influenced by local culture
