PYP Exhibition #PYPX2020

The PYP Exhibition encourages in-depth, collaborative inquiry. In the final year of the PYP, students carry out an extended, in-depth, collaborative project known as the PYP exhibition. This involves students working collaboratively to conduct an in-depth inquiry into real life issues or problems. Our originally planned PYP Exhibition has changed due to the extended school closure and Distance Learning.

The Grade 5 students have been inquiring into the Sharing the Planet transdisciplinary theme with the Central Idea of  ‘Biodiversity relies on maintaining the interdependent balance of organisms within systems’. They have built on this learning for their Exhibition and have inquired further looking at how ‘Innovation is a response to challenges’.

The Grade 5 class will share their PYP Exhibition from Monday 8th June on our Exhibition website and we hope that everyone in our school community would like to visit and see the great inquiries these hard working students have been undertaking. https://sites.google.com/view/baliispypx2020/home

Reports

Primary Reports will be published via Managebac next Tuesday 9th June. All families will receive an automated email from Managebac informing  you that your children’s reports have been published. Simply follow the link in the email to  log into Managebac and access your child’s reports.

Primary reports will not include grades this semester but will  have narrative comments from teachers. After a great deal of discussion the teachers felt that assessing primary students to allocate grades for specific learning outcomes for language and math and strand outcomes for other subjects may be inaccurate while running with Distance Learning. Teachers have used learning outcomes from our scope and sequence documents to guide their teaching, assessing and reporting. Please note that all Primary Teachers will administer  start of year benchmark assessment for reading, writing, spelling and maths to inform their teaching and grouping of students next year.

End of Year Whole School Assembly

All students, staff and parents are invited to the End of Year Whole School Assembly from 11:00am next Wednesday 10th June. Zoom invitations will follow.

Grade 5 Graduation

Our Grade 5 students participated in their Graduation Ceremony on Zoom earlier today. While nothing will match a real ceremony, the students enjoyed the celebration of their completion of Primary School. They viewed video messages from their teachers and parents, addresses by Mr Wyncol and Ibu Alison and also shared their own reflections of highlights of Primary School.   We wish these wonderful students the best of luck as they move onto Middle School.

On behalf of the leaving teachers, I would like to thank all of the students, staff and parents for making our time in Bali and at Bali Island School such a rewarding one.

Grade 3 Bahasa Indonesia A

Grade 3 has been focusing on the transdisciplinary theme of Sharing the planet with the conceptual understanding ‘To meet our needs and wants, people make choices that impact animals’. In Bahasa Indonesia A, they have been inquiring into different kinds of animals, their habitats, physical features, foods and how to look after the animals and to be a better impact on them. Students developed their vocabulary using Quizlet online activities. They read, guessed and created their own riddles. Students listened to stories, viewed videos and showed their comprehension by retelling using their own words or answering questions.

Preschool Art

“Art encourages children to think, developing skills and confidence.”

During Term 4 the children have been exploring different mediums to produce some wonderful art works. The children have explored bubble blowing, nature rubbings, painting in nature, nature sculptures and collages. Children noticed that in nature there are many shades of colour. The children explored coloring mixing, primary to secondary, and looked at making shades by adding white to coloured paints. Children used their imaginations to incorporate natural objects in new and exciting ways into their projects. The children could talk about their art works, extending their vocabulary, and describe the process followed to achieve their final outcome. Children also used art to communicate their thoughts and ideas.

Grade 1 Treasure Hunters

As part of our unit of inquiry under the theme Where We are in Place and Time, Grade 1 have been exploring mapping and position. Firstly, students read the story Me on the Map and then explored their home, street, region, country, continent and planet using Google Maps.

To support their use of positional language such as over, under, next to beside and in between, students created treasure maps. First, students made hand drawn maps using a compass, key and symbols. This activity encouraged student to sequence ideas, use clear and specific directions and consider what a bird’s eye view would look like.

They also developed their tech skills by combining backyard materials and drawing tools, to share a map with a bird’s eye view perspective that was uploaded to student portfolios.
