SEAMC: BIS Mathematics Team Fares Well in K. L.

For the seventh time in eight years, Bali Island School took part in SEAMC, the Southeast Asia Mathematics Competition. This past weekend in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, six students participated in their first-ever international mathematics competition.SEAMC 2016 - group photo day 2

The grade 7 and 8 students pictured here (left to right) are Joyce Dizon, Anastasia Basuki, Daniel Steinhauser, Malikha Aryatantra, Jae Yeon Lee, and Rufus Rice.

Despite some stiff competition from teams representing much larger schools, our six held their own and were tremendous embassadors for BIS.

The competition began immediately after our arrival on Thursday evening, with the first round being the ‘buddy’ round. Each student was matched with five other students from five different schools and they were given tasks that would last the weekend.sample question 1

Friday began before sunrise at the Alice Smith School in Kuala Lumpur, and three rounds were held throughout the day. Students also attended a presentation by keynote speaker Charlie Gilderdale, the main contributor to NRichmaths.com.SEAMC 2016 - group photo gala dinner

The other host school, Garden International School was the venue for Saturday’s three rounds. The day ended with the Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony at the Cititel Hotel.

A wonderful weekend was had by all, and hopes remain high for future editions of SEAMC, as five of our six participants will still be eligible to take part in 2017. Next year SEAMC will be held in Jakarta and hosted by the British International School.sample question 2

Despite the end of SEAMC for this year, the Math Club will continue to meet every Friday at lunch in the secondary courtyard. New members are always welcome, and surely the future of BIS Math Teams will begin there.
