Primary eNews – April 18, 2019

Check out upcoming events at the BIS Events Calendar

Key Events in the Primary School for Term 4 are listed below

Thank you to PTA – Indonesian Parents

Special thanks to our Indonesian parents who helping us celebrate the Kartini Day and make our snack time today more special with  traditional snacks. The students & staff really enjoyed this special day. We could see the spirit of Raden Ajeng Kartini in this school with many students, staffs & parents dressed in the unity of traditional ‘kebaya’ & batik.

Student Attendance

Parents are reminded to check the school calendar when planning their travel for June and July. The students will finish school at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, 12 June and return to school on Monday, 5 August 2019. The link above will take you to the BIS Events Calendar and full academic calendars are available in the Quick Links section of the school website.

While on the topic of attendance, I would also like to remind parents to keep their children home when they are sick. We have had a number of sick children attending school recently which is not good for the sick child or their classmates and teachers who have increased risk of becoming unwell themselves.

Students staying to play after school

Students are welcome to stay and play on the primary playground after school if they are being directly supervised by one of their parents. Students are not permitted to stay and play if they are with their pembantu or driver.  Please refer to this post from August written by Mr Wyncol in the eNews about this.

Parent Information Session

I will host a parent information session from 8:00 – 8:45 am on Monday 6 May, where I will share updates to the Primary School for the 2019 – 2020 Academic Year. Updates will include information on the introduction of digital portfolios, Bring Your Own Device, updates to our Math Curriculum, increasing our guided and home readers, revising the primary school timetable and more. Information will be shared after the session for parents who are unable to attend.

Primary Stu Co Talent Show

Please accept my apologies for the postponement and subsequent date changes. The Primary Stu Co Talent Show will take place from 7:50 am on Friday 10 May. We will do a final rehearsal / run through from 2:00 – 2:45 pm on Thursday 9 May.

What’s Been Happening in the Primary School Recently

Below is a summary of some of the fantastic learning that has been taking place across the school in recent weeks. Teachers post many of these things on their class blogs but by sharing them on the eNews it gives families a chance to see what is happening in other grade levels.

Education Outside the Classroom

At Bali Island School we are firm believers in the fact that learning does not only occur in the classroom but also in our playgrounds, in our school garden and farm and right across the island of Bali. Education Outside the Classroom includes any curriculum based activity that takes place outside of the school including excursions, community service, sports trips or overnight camps. These activities allow us to build on and support the the learning in the classroom and allows students to transfer their knowledge, skills and understandings to real world settings.

A major Education Outside the Classroom activity that is currently taking place involves our Grade 4 students who have been working with the students from the Kupu Kupu Foundation in Ubud. The Kupu-Kupu Foundation’s aim is to  improve the lives of people with disabilities in Bali. Our Grade 4 students visited the students at Kupu Kupu to meet them and to lead them in a range of art, music, reading and sport activities. Kupu Kupu also asked for our support in setting up a recycling programme at their centre, so our Grade 4 students have decided to use some of the profits from their upcoming Market Day to purchase recycling bins. When the Kupu Kupu students visit us at Bali Island School in the next few weeks, our Grade 4 students will help teach them about recycling through a range of activities so that the Kupu Kupu students can implement their own recycling programme. This is a great example of a sustainable action undertaken by our Grade 4 students that will again benefit the local community and environment.

For more information about the wonderful work the Kupu Kupu Foundation does, please visit their website.

Another great example of Education Outside the Classroom involved our 3 and 4 year old students  inquiring into how plants play an important role in keeping us alive earlier in the year. They were quite interested in plants that grow and live in water as opposed to soil so designed a pond which they helped to build with support from our maintenance team. We repurposed an old bathtub and set up the pond in our school farm which is now home to numerous healthy plants and a few small turtles.

Language A Indonesian

In collaboration with Grade 4 How We Organize Ourselves Unit, students in Language A Indonesian lessons inquired into the role of supply and demand and the distribution of goods and services.

In order to uncover their prior knowledge, students brainstormed ideas of what they thought they knew and any related wonderings. These thoughts were developed into questions and were later used to interview sellers at Sindhu traditional market and the art market. Students displayed the attribute of thinkers as they generated quality questions for their investigation.

Here is some of the thinking that came out of this learning experience:

Alex : Mengapa bapak/ibu menjual barang ini?

Aqvila : Apakah bapak/ibu membeli atau membuat barang-barang ini?

Oliver : Apakah bapak bekerja sendiri? Berapa orang membantu bapak?

James E. : Dari mana dapat barang-barang ini?

Jackson : Bagaimana ibu membawa barang ini ke sini? Naik apa?

Ramaputra : Apakah harganya lebih murah waktu bapak beli?

James W. : Apakah buah ini segar?

Matthew : Bagaimana ibu membuat orang tertarik belanja di sini?

Stella : Berapa banyak barang dijual satu hari?
