PTA eNews Updates – September 6, 2019

Quote of the week:

Only by giving are you able to receive more than you already had.”

Kupu-Kupu Foundation

On Tuesday 3 September, a small group of parents visited Kupu-Kupu foundation in Ubud. Those who were unable to attend gave some donations so we bought rice, oil, noodles and household products as well as some stationery and some donated paintings they could sell in their shop.

We sat in a bale and chatted with students and staff and played card games. We watched Wayan weave her beautiful and renowned cloth and were taught a few impromptu dance moves.

Kupu-Kupu Foundation was officially established as a yayasan in 2002, and since then they have been helping to improve lives in their Ubud and Bangli centres by assisting with medical care, medicines, physiotherapy and surgical operations, providing wheelchairs and other physical aids, adapting facilities to make them easier to use by people with disabilities, transporting disabled children to and from school, and helping disabled people become more independent by selling and promoting handicrafts that they make.

They also work to increase awareness in the local community of the challenges that people with disabilities face.

The foundation does not receive any government funding, so they rely on donations and support from the public as well as income raised from their non-profit ventures. The Kupu-Kupu Shop is tucked away on the Starbucks corner gang off Jalan Raya Ubud. Here you can find ethical gifts like beautifully painted artworks and colourful handicrafts made by disabled people using local materials.

The PTA Charities group are very grateful for the donations, and Begonia and the team were very happy to receive the much needed support.

Islamic New Year

The PTA put up two boards at the entrance to the school for a day, asking students to write down their wishes for Islamic New Year.

Please give blood “When you give blood you give another birthday, another anniversary, another day at the beach, another night under the stars, another talk with a friend, another laugh, another hug, another chance.”

Batik Pink Run – The PTA is looking for families who are interested in joining the batik pink run. Please let Sharon, Jane, Lina, Samantha or Sarah know if you want to join, although they ask that you register and pay directly with the organization.

Some friendly reminders:

BIS International Day

Dear BIS families from around the world,

What better way to teach our children about different cultures than by bringing them together for an afternoon of food and fun.

Friday 18th October will be our 4th annual BIS International day. Get ready to celebrate by showcasing our national and cultural diversity. We hope to have as many countries represented as possible, with food, games, traditional clothing or country colors to show off what makes us all unique.

Please keep an eye out for an email with us the relevant information and further details.

In the meantime, you can also contact Allison Jaquier (ajaquier@gmail.com) or the PTA at pta@baliis.net.

Cups and Crockery wanted!

Please help us, (and clear out your cupboards) by donating any unwanted cups and / or cutlery and crockery, and help us reduce the use of plastic and paper items in the school. All donations are greatly appreciated.
