Returning all School Resources
We will not send home Learning Packs next Monday but would ask that parents return all school resources from Thursday 4th – Tuesday 9th May. We will set up tubs between the Courtyard and Security Office so that parents can return school resources such as library books, leveled readers, and math manipulatives. Please return the resources that your child has been using in an envelope or plastic sleeves with their name clearly marked so we can keep track of who has returned what resources. There is no need to return leftover consumable items such as clay or other craft materials. Teachers will also have any student work that needs to go home such as workbooks and artwork in the tubs for parents to collect.

Grade 5 Graduation
We will be hosting a Graduation Ceremony on Zoom for our Grade 5 students next Friday 5th June from 9:30 am. An invitation with Zoom link and other details will be sent to all Grade 5 families early next week. Any other families who would like to join us for this special assembly should email primarysecretary@baliis.net and we will share the invitation with them too.

Grade 4 students have been tirelessly developing products and services for their Market Stalls as the culminating activity for How We Organise Ourselves: Economic activity relies on systems of production, exchange and consumption of goods and services.

GRADE 4 VIRTUAL MARKET PLACE
And we are very excited!
The purpose of the Market is to give students an opportunity to connect their understanding with the real world, modeling simple economic activity.
Students are:
- reflecting on needs and wants of the Primary School consumer market, to design, create and supply “products”.
- adapting “products” for a digital platform using Google tools
- making sales using Google forms and providing links to download their products.
- managing a Market Place Stall in Google Sites.
- supporting their local community.
The Grade 4 Market Place will go live, ready for “trading” Wednesday, June 3rd at 8 am (Bali time) until Thursday, June 4th at 3 pm (Bali time). A link to the Market Place will be emailed from the Primary Office next week.
All products have been made with thought, care and Grade 4 energy. As this is a digital market, purchases will be made using an order form, with purchases being a pledged amount to one of Grade 4’s chosen charities.
Links to purchases will be forwarded to our consumers at the end of the business day.

Kindergarten Gardeners
Our kindergartens have been the busiest of gardeners. Over the past three weeks, they have planted and cared for and explored the needs, parts, and importance of plants. They started with a seed and a lot of hope and in the past week, their patience has paid off as their seeds become sprouts. They have learned about the different parts of a plant, their functions, and what we use for food and other parts of our lives. The kindergartens have looked at our needs as humans and connected our needs for oxygen, shelter, and food as things that plants can provide for us, and in return, we breathe out carbon dioxide which plants need for photosynthesis to occur.

Grade 3 Stop Motion Projects!
The Grade 3 students have done an incredible job of completing their stop motion movies. They followed a 7-step process: planning, creating props, experimenting with the app, the challenge of taking around 300 photos to make 1 minute of film, and finishing it all off with narration to match. There are some really important messages about caring for our environment and looking after animals and habitats in danger. We also looked into organisations that help make a difference in the world. As a response, we came up with a quick list of our Top Ten Tips for making better choices in our world today!
- Reduce the amount of stuff you buy.
- Reuse what you already have.
- Use a bamboo or metal straw.
- Stop buying too many plastic products.
- Start using biodegradable products.
- Be part of Trash Heroes.
- Bike and walk more!
- Be mindful of your electricity usage.
- Be mindful of your water usage.
- Grow lots of plants!

Bis Library Summer Reading Borrowing Information
In these uncertain and unusual (to say the least) times, the BIS library would like to extend an offer to ensure students have ample “summer” reading opportunities.
If you are a returning family to BIS next year (this is defined as having paid the registration fee and/or Term 1 fees, confirmed with the accounting office), are currently physically located in Bali and will remain so for the school break, the library will allow students to check out up to 3 books for “summer” reading. Parents can also take advantage of this offer.
Here is a link to our Destiny online catalog where you can search our 40,000-volume book collection to see what you may want to check out. Search the books you want, and email Mr. Marshall (nmarshall@baliis.net) and Ibu Agung Lestari (alestari@baliis.net) with your “order”.
You can come to the library to look as well, however, if you want to come to the library, you must communicate with Mr. Marshall ahead of time to schedule an appointment (between 9 am and 3 pm between now and June 9; school is closed June 1). Browsing sessions will be limited to about 15 minutes. The last day to visit will be Thursday, June 9.
If you currently have BIS library books, you should have received a notification of your materials already (and will again if the materials remain outstanding). It is the library’s policy that these books be returned and accounts cleared before checking out new books for the break. If you are unsure of your account status, email Mr. Marshall or Ibu Agung. Patrons who come to check out their “summer reading” books who have 3 or more books already checked out will have to return the overdue books before checking out new ones.
Taking advantage of this program comes with the implicit agreement that any lost or damaged books would need to be replaced/compensated for by the user.
While the BIS Library is not open during the summer, we would like to offer various options to keep our students reading during the summer. Below are some great links to book recommendations, summer reading lists, and free audio and e-books. Some of these books are available at Periplus as well as the website Book Depository (who offer free shipping to Indonesia).
- Scholastic Summer Read-A-Palooza – This is a free, online-based reading program. This year it features “Scholastic Home Base”, a free digital destination that offers full books, live events, and games.
- Read Brightly – This website has book lists for all ages. Within each list, the books are described and there are links for purchasing each book on different websites and for different platforms. Parents can also find great ideas for summer literacy games and activities.
- Association for Library Services to Children – This site offers book lists for children from birth to grade 8. Each list is a printable brochure that parents can take along with them. There are many multi-culture books that children from an international school setting may find interesting.
- Reading Rockets Summer Reading List (2019) – Reading Rockets is a literacy program based in the US that puts out a comprehensive summer reading list each year.
- This page on Reading Rockets details a 10-week plan for summer literacy at home.
- Book Adventure – provides accompanying resources, games, and quizzes to complement students own’ physical book access
