BIS Library Summer Reading Borrowing Information

In these uncertain and unusual (to say the least) times, the BIS library would like to extend an offer to ensure students have ample “summer” reading opportunities.

If you are a returning family to BIS next year (this is defined as having paid the registration fee and/or Term 1 fees, confirmed with the accounting office), are currently physically located in Bali and will remain so for the school break, the library will allow students to check out up to 3 books for “summer” reading. Parents can also take advantage of this offer.

Here is a link to our Destiny online catalog where you can search our 40,000-volume book collection to see what you may want to check out.  Search the books you want, and email Mr. Marshall (nmarshall@baliis.net) and Ibu Agung Lestari (alestari@baliis.net) with your “order”.

You can come to the library to look as well, however if you want to come to the library, you must communicate with Mr. Marshall ahead of time to schedule an appointment (between 9 am and 3pm between now and June 9; school is closed June 1). Browsing sessions will be limited to about 15 minutes. The last day to visit will be Thursday, June 9.

If you currently have BIS library books, you should have received a notification of your materials already (and will again if the materials remain outstanding).  It is the library’s policy that these books be returned and accounts cleared before checking out new books for the break.  If you are unsure of your account status, email Mr. Marshall or Ibu Agung.  Patrons who come to check out their “summer reading” books who have 3 or more books already checked out will have to return the overdue books before checking out new ones.

Taking advantage of this program comes with the implicit agreement that any lost or damaged books would need to be replaced/compensated for by the user.

If you are outside of Bali, we do have our audio/ebook section of our website along with links to various “summer reading” programs. Please contact the library with any questions.

G6 Spoken Word Poetry

This semester, students finished our last unit of study, ‘A Call to Action’ which was focused on creativity. This was an Interdisciplinary Unit (IDU) between Language and Literature and Design class. In Language and Literature, students researched spoken word poetry and poets, found model poems they liked, researched the techniques used in these poems, and wrote their own spoken word poetry around a global issue of their choice. As their final summative assessment for this unit, students worked on creating their own videos recording their beautiful poems, carefully designing and plotting what these looked like and what they included. Students worked hard on researching, planning, using persuasive language, communication skills, and expressing their creative sides.  Enjoy this selection of our student’s amazing videos!

Secondary Music & Performing Arts Sharing

It has come to the time of year where the Arts would usually be taking to the MPR stage for their end of course performances & presentations. Although this year has taken a slightly different turn, the students have still managed to put together some wonderful works of art through collaborating online. The process is much more challenging, however, new skills were developed and new talents discovered. The action of creating videos has certainly come to the forefront in the process of expressing art and in reaching our intended audience.

Grade 6/7 has been studying the magical world of Disney and attached is a beautiful rendition of ‘Let It Go’ from Frozen. Thank you Pak Agas for taking the time to synchronize the parts and bring the students together on screen.

Let It Go Video

Grade 8/9 studied Film Music in term 3 and took on the challenging Adele song named ‘Sky Fall’. The students used a backing track to help them synchronize their parts, however, you can hear their instruments coming through and Cintya Roby should be praised for her powerful on-screen performance, along with having the courage to step up to be the class singer for this piece.

Skyfall Video

The grade 10 experiences we are sharing in this article is from back a few months, just before we went online. Well-known filmmaker Erick Est visited the performing arts department with aspiring actor ‘Aaron Lawrie’. Together students and teachers devised a plot, set in the 60s and relating to the 1969 moon landing. During a class, an uninvited astronaut enters the room, much to the surprise of the students and teacher, before being ejected from the building courtesy of the burly security guards played by Mir and Jared. Enjoy!
