CAS Corner by Zildji Ismadyanputri
The project that I am currently involved in is one intending to assist the Kupu Kupu Foundation, an organization that seeks to support the community of people with disabilities living in Bali. I, along with two of my fellow classmates, have constructed the following goal for ourselves; To assist in improving the livelihoods of the disabled community during a global pandemic by providing the resources they need to better support themselves. Throughout the process of planning our project and having our first several meetings, I believe that I have accomplished the following Learning Outcomes:

LO1: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
I came into the first meeting with the MYP students and our supervisor thinking that we would easily flow into open discussion, but I failed to realize that my younger peers might be too shy to speak up. I didn’t have much experience leading a conversation/discussion, but after a while, that felt quite stagnant, my supervisor suggested to my friends and me that we could create a jam board where everyone could collaborate and write down their ideas, which proved to be a great solution. Overall, this first meeting taught me how to better communicate with other people, especially younger audiences, and how I could stimulate open discussion or in this case, collaboration through online mediums.

LO2: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
I think that it has been quite easy so far to accomplish this learning outcome as it is just the beginning of our project, and I still hold much enthusiasm that I hope I can maintain throughout the entire project. However, I think I have shown commitment through the plan we have created together, as we are looking to accomplish some long-term goals that aren’t necessarily easy to complete. The google classroom we created to communicate with the MYP students and each other, as well as the minute meetings we wrote down for future reference, shows our commitment and that we are willing to put extra measures to ensure that this project runs smoothly.

Grade 12 Economics students completed their IA journey
The grade 12 Economics students handed in their final Internal assessment last week. Economics students have to write three commentaries (750 words each) over the two-year course for each section of the syllabus – Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and International Economics. The students completed their first IA on Microeconomics in February 2020, the second IA on Macroeconomics in May 2020, and last week they handed in their final IA about International Economics. The Internal assessment in Economics enables students to demonstrate the application of their knowledge and understanding of economic theory to real-world situations. Students wrote their IA’s on topics like a tax increase on alcohol in the Philippines, a subsidy for electric vehicles in Germany, income tax changes in South Africa, poverty rates and inequality in Thailand, interest rate cuts in England to combat the impact of the coronavirus or tariff removals on beef in Japan. The three IA’s will contribute 25% towards the final IBDP Economics score. Having completed the IA journey is a fantastic moment for the students.
