Grade 6 & 7 Fine Arts Sharing

Students will shortly enter their third and final rotation of the Arts (Music, Art, and Drama) for this academic year. To celebrate we will hold an Arts Sharing event online on Monday, March 8, 5 pm with zoom, and everyone is invited to enjoy the show. Be sure to tune in as the students have produced some outstanding work and we would like to enjoy and acknowledge their outstanding achievements.

The link for the event will be shared 24 hours prior to the event so please check your email and contact me if there are any issues finding it. (eandrews@baliis.net). We look forward to spending the afternoon celebrating Grade 6 & 7 achievements in the Arts with the BIS Community.

Green Team
Learning Objectives and Aims:
In this year’s Green Team, we have three main topics and areas of concern we want to address; That is the idea of sustainability, issues relating to the coronavirus as well as reducing the food waste in our community. In a time where we are worried about a global pandemic, we strive to think about issues that are still prevalent in our community while still staying within the guidelines and staying safe. These activities would be done through many different forms of media that invite the community and group around us to speak up about the issues in our community and make Bali Island School an even better place.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
  2. Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
  3. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
  4. Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

Contacting Urban Biologist for a Partnership

This week I contacted my supervisors for permission to contact an external organization, Urban Biologist, for a partnership. Despite Bali being on lockdown, I am still persistent in contacting them to create future plans or possible online activities. The reason for choosing Urban Biologist is because their message connects to ours quite closely; they are focused on reducing our negative effects to the environment through creating compost and doing activities while we want to better our school environment and understand the ethics of our choices.

Term 3 Green Team Progress and Future Plans!
For our future plans of progressing forward, we plan on:

  1. Uploading the posters on the daily bulletin as well as announcing them on the assembly
  2. Uploading our progress on to the google sites for the MYP students

Overall, however I am quite proud of our group since we have been able to always update weekly tasks to the MYP students. We are also communicating consistently with our supervisors Ms. C and Ms. Perin through chat. Additionally, we have also been communicating with the next leaders after us so that they know what we need to do in the future!

Hello! We are the BMMG also known as the BIS Mask Making Group.
The members of the BMMG are Eduardo, Carl-Dominik, Ayden from grade 6, and Morisa from grade 12.

Our goal was to create masks for the children of Taman Bacaan, and we have achieved that goal. On February 23, we set out to hand-deliver the masks to the children of Taman Bacaan and put a really big smile on their faces (under the masks of course). This group was founded for the first time in September last year, and over the course of six months, we cut, lay, and put together 30 masks for the children of Taman Bacaan. This wasn’t an easy task for us, especially during these corona times we haven’t been able to see each other for quite a while.

Here are some photos from our process:

MYP Corner
Personal Project Exhibition – 10 March
It’s that time of year again where we get to showcase the creations of our students who have worked so long and hard for over the past year. This is my favourite time as it always gives me great joy to see the many products our students have made.

Distance learning has been one of our biggest challenges faced by our students. They have practiced and achieved so many skills and knowledge in conducting their projects which has been a testament to the growth they have achieved within the confinement of quarantine.

A Virtual Exhibition

This year we are doing things a little differently. We will be having a virtual exhibition. Our students will record themselves in a 3-5 minute video discussing their process, the skills they have achieved, and of course the final product they were challenged to create.

On March 10 in a student-run assembly, we will be presenting all of the students’ products to the school community. Grade 10 students will be divided up into groups and here they will present various student videos during this day. The rest of the MYP cohort are encouraged to ask questions and have them answered by the grade 10 students during this time.

The videos will be made available to the wider community and from March 10 they will be entered onto our school website and our new BIS Personal Project website. I encourage you all to view your child’s and other products

A Public Speaking Unit with the Grade 9s – By Mrs. Erickson

In the past couple of weeks since starting our public speaking unit, Grade 9s have been busy analyzing famous speeches for their ideas, techniques, and elements with a focus on purpose and target audience. We have now switched gears and are looking specifically at what it takes to present a powerful speech.

It was exciting and fun to have Aidan Robinson’s dad, Rich Robinson, who is a professional public speaker and stand-up comedian join our Google Meet on Monday to talk about his experiences with public speaking and what has helped him be successful in his career.

The Grade 9s learned some valuable tips on body language and voice, as well as a powerful message on being ok with failure, learning from mistakes, and always trying again and again.  Thank you, Mr. Robinson, for your time, it was great to have a fresh face in our Google Meet!

Counseling
Resiliency is the ability to bounce back after experiencing tough times. Resiliency is a predictor of longevity and life satisfaction.

One tool for building resiliency is adversity journaling. How does it work? Write in free-form for fifteen minutes without worrying about spelling or grammar about a distressing experience in your life. When you write, try to let go and explore your emotions. You can consider links between your experience and your relationships with others. You might want to link it to your past, present, or future self. Trying this for 15 minutes a day over four days (can focus on one event or different ones) has benefits of an improved immune system and work or school performance (Akhtar, 2012).

You can try this yourself and have your teens give it a try.
