Grade 4 EOTC Built Environments and Natural Environments

Connecting the real world to our inquiry, the impact of structures on the environment and of the environment on structures, Grade 4 made a short trek to Pantai Segara and Pantai Sindhu.

They listed various built and natural environments and identified how they were being used to make general suggestions about the purpose of their design.

Students evaluated evidence to identify both positive and negative impacts the built environment has on the natural environment. One example they suggested was providing access for recreation and active transport with pathways. Grade 4 noticed that a lot of activity in the area was for recreation: swimming, cycling, eating, fishing, walking and relaxing. While visiting the Turtle Conservation Centre, they learned that the same area is a popular nesting place for Olive Ridley turtles and that increased recreational activity puts these nests at risk, a negative consequence. Fortunately, when presented with a problem, innovation often occurs and this was a nice connection to another unit of inquiry, Where we are in place and time.

Back on campus, Grade 4 applied their observations, discussions and prior learning to design challenges: the tallest tower, applying shape and reinforcement to stabilise a structure; and a gingerbread man’s bridge, designed based on available limited materials and ingenuity. Lots of creative collaboration here!

Following the theme of innovation and the talent of author Roald Dahl, as an innovator and fantastic storyteller, Grade 4 extended their day with a movie, pizza and popcorn night, comparing the movie and novel “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”.

What an awesome way to celebrate our achievements as learners with our final unit of Grade 4, you are Rockstars!
