Counselor Corner – 11th Aug 2023

Later this month many Bali Island School students will be attending camp.  For some students, and their parents, this can be an anxiety provoking process.

There might be worries about separation, homesickness, forming friendships, or that the activities will be too scary/dangerous.

Rest assured that these worries and thoughts are completely human and normal.

Research has shown that there is much children can gain from attending camps, for example:

  • Trying something new and exciting
  • Making friendships
  • Discovering new strengths
  • Taking controlled risks and growing in confidence
  • Building resilience
  • Developing an appreciation of nature

If your child is worried about camp, please speak with them about it.  You could:

  • Ask them about what their worries and  fears are.  Then validate their emotions ‘that sounds scary, you are worried about that’ and then challenge any misconceptions ‘and Ibu/Pak will be there to keep you safe and look after you’.
  • Look through the camp activities with your child.  Knowing what will happen on camp will make it less scary for them.
  • Come up with a cope ahead plan – ‘if you are not coping speak with ______, and they will contact me’.
  • Make the process of preparing for camp a fun experience.  Go shopping together for the equipment that you need.
  • Speak to your child about what they could gain from the experience.

Remember that feelings of anxiety are clues that we are about to do something very brave, and when we do something brave we grow.
