Counselor’s Corner – February 7, 2020

Social-Emotional Counseling

Students in grades 6-10 are learning about non-violent communication and peer mediation in their health classes this month. STUCO members, who have been trained in the 6-step mediation process, help lead their classmates through a full mock mediation from gathering points of view to finding win-win solutions to the conflicts and finally, creating an agreement both disputants can live with. Students learn how to request and what to expect in a mediation and also that mediations are always voluntary and confidential.

In addition to learning about peer mediation, students are learning how to use non-violent communication by making “I statements” ie:  I feel sad when you call me names, because I have a need for, respect and I’d like you to stop.

They also learn to identify statements of negative self talk and to re-frame these messages into more positive statements.
