Advertising in Grade 4
Inquiring into media, messages, and persuasion was a focus in Grade 4 last term. Students explored different types of advertising and analyzed samples to suggest the message and target audience. They reflected on how images, text, color, and music can be used to influence a consumer.
To consolidate their learning, students worked in small groups to design some fun health messages, connecting to their understanding of the Who We Are unit.
Here are some messages to take to start the weekend… Stay healthy and happy!
Hello from Preschool
Happy New Year to all of us, and wishing you a happy and healthy New Year 2023!
This term Preschool is having a Unit of How We Express Ourselves with the Central Idea: We celebrate the things that are important to us in different ways.
For the tuning in, we started the unit by talking about the celebration that is happening in Bali, which is Galungan and Kuningan as it is an important celebration for Hindu people and followed by the Chinese New year celebration.
We watched the video and learned about the history behind the celebration, then the students did the activities that are related to the celebration and also being open-minded about trying the food and the costume from different cultures.
Galungan and Kuningan
This is the picture of the kids doing Ngelawang. Usually, Balinese people do Ngelawang during Galungan and Kuningan Celebrations by using barong and traditional instruments to walk around the neighborhood to scare the evil spirit.
Offerings, Food, and Costume.
Preschool students also learned that during Galungan and Kuningan, Balinese people make special offerings. We talked about the special parts of the offerings, and we went praying at our school temple.
We had a chance to prepare and be open-minded by trying special food called Nasi Kuning.
Om Swastyastu. Look at us wearing Balinese costumes! We are so happy to get a chance to wear the costume and learn about the celebration.
Chinese New Year
The next celebration that we have is the Chinese New Year. We are so excited to learn about different cultures from China and to experience the activities that they do during this special day.
We feel special while wearing Chinese Costumes.
We made special food called dumplings. We learned that the shape of the dumpling represents the symbol of Chinese money.
Chinese people believe that Nian, the bad monster scared of Red color, loud noise, and fire. So that is why the Chinese people do the barongsai dance and play the firecracker during this celebration.
Next week, the students will use the knowledge that they got from those 2 celebrations and try to define what celebration is, the features of celebrations, and the reason why they celebrate it.
